KEEP GOING Connie Kaldor @ word of mouth music SOCAN
Need a buck and you got a dime
Keep going
You’re out of luck, working overtime
Keep going
You are wrong every time you try
Keep going
The road is long, the mountain’s high
Keep going
You hope the tunnels got a light
But it’s too dark to tell
Remember, if you’re going through hell
Keep going .
You’re in a pinch and life is hard
Keep going
You get an inch when you need a yard
Keep going
8 more hours and you are beat
Keep going
You have sour when you want sweet
Keep going
You hope the tunnels got a light
But it’s too dark to tell
Remember, if you’re going through hell
Keep going .
Someones cheating and its not fair
Keep going
Some are eating while your plate’s bare
Keep going
When what you’re facing is crazy town
Keep going
If something’s chasing you don’t slow down
Keep going
You hope the tunnels got a light
But it’s too dark to tell
Remember, if you’re going through hell
Keep going .
On a slippery slope, you better take care
Keep going
At the end of your rope, climb back up there
Keep going
Cause who wants to stay where you’ve taken a hit
Get through, get around, or get over it
Keep going
You hope the tunnels got a light
But it’s too dark to tell
Remember, if you’re going through hell
Keep going .

Pain and Sorrow

PAIN AND SORROW 3:29 Connie Kaldor @word of mouth music SOCAN
Pain and sorrow at your side
And a heart too heavy to carry
You’ve got a small small shovel and hard hard ground
And a lot of troubles to bury
You can count the minutes but they are long
You can share your sorrows with an old blues song
They know about troubles and burdens to bear
And that anyone can end up there
Pain and sorrow at your side
And a heart too heavy to carry
You’ve got a small small shovel and hard hard ground
And a lot of troubles to bury
You sometimes wish you didn’t care
But that’s not how you want to live
Disappointments hard to bear
It’s all take and no forgive
Pain and sorrow at your side
And a heart too heavy to carry
You’ve got a small small shovel and hard hard ground
And a lot of troubles to bury
You know that “this too shall pass “
Despair and hope each have their place
But trouble’s got you and it’s holding fast
And you have this day to face
Pain and sorrow at your side
And a heart too heavy to carry
You’ve got a small small shovel and hard hard ground
And a lot of troubles to bury

This was written in the car driving though the prairies after seeing a friend deal with unforeseen trouble and the fall out afterwards. It seemed like hymn material to me. Theres something about looking at that prairie vista that puts things into perspective and helps us see the universal in it all. For me singing about something always makes it better.

Leads to a Kiss

LEADS TO A KISS. 3:33. CONNIE KALDOR @ word of mouth music SOCAN
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Have i read the signals well?
‘Cause it’s often hit or miss
Sometimes it’s hard to tell
But if i ignore all these signs will i be remiss ?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Or is it only in my head?
Only coming from one side?
Does that look mean ”walk on by“?
Or is it ”welcome to the ride“?
Is this the moment we’ll talk about when we reminisce?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Should i get a little close?
Put my number in your phone?
Between right now and heaven knows
Could we find ourselves alone?
Because you make my knees melt like that chocolate made by the Swiss
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
And will it lead to hellos
And peeling off clothes
Or a kiss on the cheek?
Oh god not one of those,
Not one of those.
‘Cause there’s this pause when our eyes meet
That lasts a little too long
And the smile you gave’s so sweet
I hope i haven’t got this wrong.
Is there a map that will show me where i stand in all of this?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
Is this what leads to a kiss?
The vocal, guitar and bass were recorded live off the floor, one continuous take, no overdubs.

I think I may have watched too many rom coms in 2020, I was imagining a scene where there are two people and their eyes meet at an event like an art gallery opening and the jazz combo would be playing this song. Its an old fashioned style with an old fashioned sentiment, the kiss, but some things just never go out of style.

Set You Free

SET YOU FREE. 2:52. C. KALDOR @ word of mouth music SOCAN
He told you, you weren’t good enough
It’s over and goodbye
Why do you believe that little lie?
Your kind of love sticks by through thick and thin
And you had more of thin than thick
Still you put your shoulder to his wheel and
Built your house brick by brick by brick
Did you forget
How it felt before
The bed springs were shot
And the slamming of the door?
I wonder when you’ll realize
I wonder when you’ll see?
He didn’t let you go
He set you free
i know you promised to love forever
Did you forget that he promised too?
And he broke that promise a few times before
He broke up with you
But you pinched your pennies worked your fingers to the bone
All that worry in your voice on the telephone
How many bills were piled up at your door?
How many dreams that you had
Weren’t there anymore?
I wonder when you’ll realize
I wonder when you’ll see?
He didn’t let you go
He set you free
You’re stronger than you’ll ever know
Someday you’ll cut your losses and then look at you go
I wonder when you’ll realize
I wonder when you’ll see?
He didn’t let you go
He set you free
Lead vocal, piano Connie Kaldor
Guitars; Zacharie Bachand
Bass: Stéphane Krims

More of a “heartmend” song as opposed to a heartbreak song, it’s a poignant reminder to listeners that often, being dumped may be a blessing in disguise.

DAFFODIL 2:46 C. Kaldor @word of Mouth Music SOCAN
Spring made it here yesterday
But winter wouldn’t let her be
He strutted in last night and
Covered all with white.
As if to say “ that belongs to me”
And spring just smiled her smile
And whispered to the shoots
He’s mad because he’s used to having sway
But the world keeps going round
In a day or two he’s bound
To realise that change is here to stay
There’s a yellow daffodil that opened anyway
I kind of think it’s proud of being bold
Saying “ blooms may come and go
But I’m the first to show
I am strong enough to brave the cold”
And looking out my window i learned a thing or two
Troubles blow in and they always will
And I can sit and wait,
I can curse my fate
But as for me
I’d rather be
That daffodil.

Written while looking out my window, practicing a new picking pattern.

SAD IS YOUR PASSING. 2:49. Connie Kaldor. @word of mouth music SOCAN
Sad is your passing, but your living was grand
How you played and you sang along with the band
How you loved to go dancing
You were light on the floor
You were always the last one out of the door
Sad is your passing, but your living was grand
How you made someone’s life just by taking their hand
How you took all your troubles
And you made them work out
‘Cause you knew that joy is what life’s all about
Sad is your passing but your living was grand
You were dear to us all and that’s why we stand
And raise up a glass of our favourite brew
And toast all the things that we loved about you
And all of those things would make a long list
Sad is your passing, you will be missed

Woman Who Pays

THE WOMAN WHO PAYS 4:36 C. Kaldor @word of mouth music SOCAN
When times get tough and the anger reigns
It’s the woman who pays
Same old story again and again
It’s the woman who pays
A woman a week dead in Montreal
It’s the woman who pays
The last in a line of 911 calls
It’s the woman who pays
How many angry lies are said?
How many kids hiding under their bed?
What is the cost of that roof over their head ?
It’s the woman who pays
It’s the woman who pays
You can blame it on the drugs and the alcohol
It’s the woman who pays
Loss of anger control pushed her through the wall
It’s the woman who pays
How many kicks on the kitchen floor
Waiting for the cops pounding at the door ?
How long till he says he won’t do it anymore?
It’s the woman who pays
It’s the woman who pays
He doesn’t like her friends, doesn’t like her hair
It’s the woman who pays
And when he doesn’t like something then she better beware
It’s the woman who pays
He says that he’s rich so they’ll never believe
Just put on your smile and your longer sleeves
And he’ll hunt her down and kill her and the kids if she leaves
It’s the woman who pays
It’s the woman who pays
She’ll have to press charges or they’ll let him go
It’s the woman who pays
Fear is the bruise that doesn’t show
It’s the woman who pays
How many hits till he calls a halt?
Every time its all her fault
What is domestic about assault?
It’s the woman who pays
It’s the woman who pays
It’s the woman who pays

In 2021 there were 8 women in 8 weeks killed by their partners. One of those women was someone who my daughter in law knew from high school. Amidst all the talk on radio and television around the protest that was launched I kept thinking Its the woman who pays. Suzie Vinnick was so gracious to contribute her brilliant guitar playing to this track.

Wild One

WILD ONE 3:47 C. Kaldor @word of mouth music SOCAN
She’s a wild one
She never walked she always ran
She’s a wild one
Climb any tree saying “yes I can “
She’s a wild one
No fence in town she couldn’t leap
And no promise she made she wouldn’t keep
They blamed her for every choice that her mama made
But they’d all line up at her mama’s door the minute they got paid
She’s a wild one
She’d win every race and folks would shake their heads
She’s a wild one
In a world of beige she was neon red
She’s a wild one
Bought a truck and painted it electric blue
And fast, was the only speed she knew
Her mama said there’s no reason that you’ll do what i have done
I have made my mistakes but honey you’re not one.
You’re strong as a prairie storm
Pretty as a sunset sky
And like that hawk overhead
You were made to fly
You’re a wild one
She’s a wild one
She’s got a smile goes right to her eyes
She’s a wild one
Top of the class to everyone’s surprise
She’s a wild one
The last day of school that town in her rearview mirror
Everyone knew she was never ever coming back here
Her mama said “Go live your life and don’t you ever feel shame
‘Cause some folks cannot stand what they cannot tame.”
You’re strong as a prairie storm
Pretty as a sunset sky
And like that hawk overhead
You were made to fly
You’re a wild one
You’re strong as a prairie storm
Pretty as a sunset sky
And like that hawk overhead
You were made to fly
You’re a wild one
Beautiful wild one
You’re a wild one

In homage to the women of the prairies, “Wild One” celebrates all those grand souls out there that are told they are too loud, too fast, too excited about things, don’t know their place, have too many ideas, and should slow down and try to fit in. You are “as strong as a prairie storm

Solo Clarinet
03:38
|

There’s nothing lonelier than a solo clarinet
But when Emily plays she’s as happy as a laugh
She sends her melodies floating down her street
Through the window of her 1 and 1/2
Emily’s got a landlord
And he’s lonely and he’s mean
But he hates to be reminded of that
But every time he hears her play her clarinet
He pounds on the ceiling of her flat
You can’t please everyone
But there’s always some you do
Music is a lifeline as we drift
No you can’t please everyone
But even if that’s true
Never doubt the beauty of the gift.
Emily has to play a little every day
That’s the only way you stay any good
It takes a lot of practice to get sweet notes
Out of a little bit of reed and wood
There’s someone walking down her street
Someone she’ll never meet
But he stops and listens to her play
And something in that lonely played so sweet
Is what gets him through another day.
You can’t please everyone
There’s always some you do
Music is a lifeline as we drift
No you can’t please everyone
But even if that’s true
Never doubt the beauty of the gift.
You can’t please everyone
There’s always some you do
Music is a lifeline as we drift
No you can’t please everyone
But even if that’s true
Never doubt the beauty of the gift
Never doubt the beauty of the gift
Classical arrangement Stéphane Krims
Piano and vocal: Connie Kaldor
Bass: Stéphane Krims
Violin: Aleksi Campagne
Cello: Stéphane Krims
Featuring on Clarinet: Emily Grey
Drums Aaron Dohlman
"Solo Clarinet" draws inspiration from a friend's apartment woes and the ‘challenging’ landlord who lived upstairs. It’s difficult finding affordable housing nowadays, particularly for musicians who also need a space that allows them to practise their instrument. From Kaldor’s perspective, “this chorus is something I still need to hear myself.” If she had any advice to give young musicians, it’s this chorus: “You can’t please everyone, but there’s always some you do. Music is a lifeline as we drift. No you can’t please everyone, but even if that’s true, never doubt the beauty of the gift.”

WITHOUT YOU. C. Kaldor. © word of mouth music SOCAN
I can’t take another step without you
I’ll just stop here for a while
Let the world go rushing round about me
I’ll just stop here for a while
What was two is now just one
What was new is now all done
I will gather up my things without you
All the bitter and the sweet
I will gather strength within without you
I will get back on my feet
What was two is now just one
Days go through but i’m undone
I will find a way to live without you
I don’t know how I don’t know where
I will gather all my friends about me
I will get by in their care
What was two is one again
Things to do but until then
I can’t take another step without you
I’ll just stop here for a while

Not a Sentimental Song

NOT A SENTIMENTAL SONG C. KALDOR @ word of mouth music SOCAN
This is not a sentimental song
That wouldn’t be enough
For love that brought us all the best of times and
Got us through the rough, No
This is not a sentimental song
That just wouldn’t do
For the love that goes from you to me and
Back from me to you
Cause the sun’s not sentimental
But it shows up every day
And it warms us and everyone around
And that’s what this song should say
This is not a sentimental song
Like you hear on TV
Full of all the little things
They say that love should be, no
This is not a sentimental song
No on your knees, caught on a phone
No this is years and years of eyes that meet
Chasing back the “I’m alone “
Cause the river’s not sentimental
It gets stronger every day
And it’s beauty and it’s fierce
That’s what this song should say
No this is not a sentimental song
No four line verse found on a card
It’s things that last like having kids and
And planting trees in the backyard
It might deserve some strings
But only if they’re real
And a haunting sweet reflection
Of the depth of what I feel
Cause the stars aren’t sentimental
But they always shine above
And the north star always leads us home
That is like our love
This is not a sentimental song
No
This is not a sentimental song
This is not a sentimental song
